2025 우리는 서로의 섬에 닻을 내렸다

각자의 섬처럼 존재하던 삶들이 빨래터라는 물가에서 만나, 서로를 향해 닻을 내리는 순간을 은유한다. 물 위에 연결된 섬들과 그 위에 투명하게 피어난 고사리의 형상을 통해, 서로의 삶을 비추고 기대며 함께 머무는 ‘움직이는 공동체’를 그려낸다.

빨래터는 단순히 물을 긷고 빨래를 하던 공간을 넘어, 억압과 가난 속에서도 여성들이 하루를 이어가며 서로의 삶을 지탱해주던 공동체의 중심이었다. 그들이 나눈 이야기와 노동의 움직임은 곧 삶의 닻이자, 지지대가 되었다.

작품은 ‘닻’, ‘지지대’, ‘움직이는 섬’이라는 세 가지 조형 요소로 구성된다. 닻은 물살 속에서도 자리를 지키려는 삶의 선택을, 지지대는 서로가 버텨온 관계를, 움직이는 섬은 흔들리면서도 떠 있는 삶의 단단함을 상징한다.

섬 위에 놓인 여러 개의 고사리 조형물은, 물기를 머금은 듯 맑고 투명한 모습으로 피어난다. 이 투명한 고사리들은 그 사이로 다른 고사리, 관람자, 풍경이 투과되어 보이기도 한다. 이는 삶과 삶이 스쳐 지나거나 엉키는 순간들을 닮아 있다.

서로 다른 고립된 ‘섬’처럼 보이지만, 우리는 결국 그 안에서 서로를 비추고, 기대며, 연대하며 살아간다.

* 고사리는 척박한 환경에서도 끈질기게 자라는 생명력의 상징이며, 과거 가난한 시절 여성들이 가족의 끼니를 이어가기 위해 가장 쉽게 채집하고 먹을 수 있었던 산나물이기도 하다. 그런 고사리는 곧, 빨래터에서 삶을 지탱하던 여성들의 억척스러운 생명력, 그리고 보이지 않는 헌신을 비유하는 존재다.



This artwork shows the moment when people, like small islands, meet at the water’s edge of the old village laundry site and gently drop anchors toward each other. The connected floating islands and the clear, blooming brackens on top of them create a picture of a moving community—one where people reflect each other, lean on each other, and stay together.
The laundry site was more than just a place to wash clothes. It was a center of life, where women, even in hard times, kept going and supported one another. Their shared work and conversations became anchors and strong supports in their lives.
The piece is made of three main parts: the anchor, the support, and the moving island. The anchor stands for choosing to stay in one place even when life is moving fast. The support shows the strength found in helping one another. The moving island stands for a strong but gentle life that keeps floating, even while shaking.
On each island, several clear bracken shapes are placed. They look like they’ve just come out of water—fresh and see-through. Through these brackens, you can sometimes see other brackens, the scenery, or even your own reflection. These shapes remind us of how lives touch or cross paths.
We may each be like small islands, but in the end, we reflect one another, support one another, and live together.

* The bracken is a symbol of strong life that grows even in poor conditions. In the past, during times of poverty, it was a wild plant that women could easily gather to feed their families. In this work, the bracken represents the quiet strength and unseen dedication of the women who supported life at the laundry site.
