모든 이야기는 장소에서 시작된다.

그 장소는, 그곳을 살아온 사람들의 손과 시간, 그리고 기억으로 쌓인다.

‘2025 월간 영귀미’ 프로젝트는 영귀미면 속초1리를 중심으로, 다섯 개의 장소에서 마을의 기억과 그곳에서 살아온 사람들의 삶의 감정을 예술적으로 재해석해온 연속 전시 프로젝트다.

5월의 원개울 빨래터에서 시작된 전시 《이야기는 물가에서 시작됐다》는 사람들이 모여 삶을 나누던 자리에서 ‘이야기의 시작’을 찾았다. 6월 《영영 남을 이야기》의 남영문구사, 7월 《멈춤과 출발 사이》의 영귀미면사무소와 동면치안센터 버스정류장, 8월 《살아남는 중입니다》의 청소년공간 꿈틀로 이어지는 전시는 마을의 일상 공간 속에서 관계와 감정의 흔적을 탐색했다. 그리고 9월 《과정창고: 사라진 흔적들》에서는 서울 영등포산업선교회에서, 영귀미면의 농촌과 노동의 과정을 주제로 한 전시를 통해 지역의 이야기가 보다 넓은 사회적 맥락으로 확장되었다.

이처럼 ‘속초리’의 작은 장소에서 시작된 이야기는 점차 삶의 과정과 시대의 흐름 속으로 뻗어나갔다.

빨래터의 물결처럼 이어진 시간의 층위들은, 사람들의 손과 노동, 감정과 기억을 통해 ‘영귀미’라는 이름의 또 다른 서사를 만들어갔다.

10월의 전시 《속초리, 다시 쓰는 이야기》는 그 여정의 마침이자 새로운 시작이다. 그동안의 다섯 개 전시에서 모인 기억과 흔적, 그리고 사람들의 대화가 하나의 서사로 엮인다. 마을회관과 경로당 주변 공간에 마련된 이번 전시는 ‘자리’와 ‘말’을 중심으로 속초리의 풍경과 목소리를 다시 불러내며, 사라지지 않을 마을의 기억을 기록한다.

‘다시 쓰는 이야기’는 과거를 복원하는 것이 아니라, 그 기억 위에 새로운 언어를 덧입히는 일이다. 이곳에서 주민과 작가, 그리고 관람객은 서로의 이야기를 주고받으며, 각자가 기억하는 속초리를 다시 쓴다.

‘2025 월간 영귀미’는 이렇게 하나의 순환을 완성하지만, 동시에 내년으로 이어지는 문을 연다. 2026년에는 영귀미면의 11개 마을 이름을 주제로, ‘이름을 다시 쓰는 전시’가 열릴 예정이다. 속초리에서 시작된 이야기는 이제 영귀미 전역으로 확장되며, 우리가 살아가는 ‘이름의 자리’를 다시 묻는다.


Every story begins with a place.
That place is built by the hands, time, and memories of the people who have lived there.

The project ‘2025 Monthly Yeonggwimi’ is a series of exhibitions based in Sokcho 1-ri, Yeonggwimi-myeon.

Through five different sites, it reinterprets the memories of the village and the emotions of the people who have lived there through artistic language.

In May, the first exhibition 《The Story Began by the Water》 at the Wongaeul laundry site found the beginning of a story in the place where people once gathered to share their lives. In June, 《A Story That Will Remain》 at Namyoung Stationery; in July, 《Between Pause and Departure》 at the Yeonggwimi Town Office and Dongmyeon Police Center bus stop; and in August, 《Still Surviving》 at the youth space Kkumteul, each explored traces of relationships and emotions within everyday village spaces. Then, in September, 《Process Warehouse: Lost Traces》 was held at the Seoul Yeongdeungpo Industrial Mission, expanding the story of Yeonggwimi’s rural life and labor into a broader social context.

In this way, the story that began in the small village of Sokcho-ri slowly reached out into the flow of life and time. Like the ripples of the stream by the laundry site, layers of time continued, creating another narrative of “Yeonggwimi” through people’s hands, labor, emotions, and memories.

The October exhibition 《Sokcho-ri, Rewriting the Story》 marks both an end and a new beginning. The memories, traces, and conversations gathered from the five previous exhibitions are now woven into one narrative. Held in and around the village hall and senior center, this exhibition recalls the scenery and voices of Sokcho-ri through the ideas of place and speech, recording the memories of the village that will not fade. To rewrite a story is not to restore the past, but to add a new language upon it. Here, residents, artists, and visitors share their stories and, together, rewrite their own Sokcho-ri.

‘2025 Monthly Yeonggwimi’ thus completes one cycle, yet at the same time opens a door to what comes next. In 2026, a new exhibition will unfold, focusing on the names of the eleven villages in Yeonggwimi-myeon — a project to rewrite the names themselves. The story that began in Sokcho-ri now expands across Yeonggwimi, asking again about the place — and meaning — of the names we live within.

존경하는 예술인 여러분, 그리고 소중한 지역 주민 여러분,오늘 이 뜻깊은 자리에 함께하게 되어 진심으로 기쁘게 생각합니다.

지난 5월의 어느 날, 저는 박주희 작가로부터 한 통의 연락을 받았습니다. 젊은 예술가들과 함께 ‘영귀미면’을 소재로 한 지역 기반 예술 프로젝트를 진행하고 싶다는 제안이었습니다. 그는 단순한 전시를 넘어, 지역의 삶과 이야기를 이해하기 위한 첫걸음부터 하고 싶다고 말했습니다. 그 순간 저는 깊은 감동을 받았습니다. 예술이 지역의 맥락 위에서 태어나고, 사람의 삶 속에서 다시 호흡하려는 그 마음이 얼마나 귀한지를 여러분도 공감하시리라 생각합니다.

강원특별자치도 홍천군의 동쪽에 자리한 영귀미면(詠歸美面)은 이름부터가 이미 한 편의 시(詩)입니다. 詠(영)은 읊고 노래함을, 歸(귀)는 돌아감을, 美(미)는 아름다움을 뜻합니다. 즉, “노래를 부르며 아름다운 곳으로 돌아온다”, “아름다움 노래하며 고향으로 돌아간다”는 뜻이죠. 그 속에는 자연과 사람, 그리고 고향의 조화로운 삶을 향한 깊은 그리움이 담겨 있습니다.

조선시대에는 ‘홍천현 영귀미면’이었던 이 지역은, 일제강점기에 ‘동면(東面)’으로 이름이 바뀌었지만, 주민들은 오랜 세월 동안 그 이름을 마음속에서 잊지 않았습니다. 결국 2021년 6월 1일, 주민들의 뜻이 하나로 모여 본래의 이름 ‘영귀미면’을 되찾았습니다. 이 일은 단순한 행정 절차가 아니라, 고향의 역사와 정신을 되찾고, 지역의 정체성을 회복한 상징적인 사건이었습니다. 이처럼 영귀미라는 이름에는 이 지역 사람들의 자부심과 기억, 그리고 시대를 견뎌온 공동체의 힘이 담겨 있습니다.

오늘날의 영귀미면은 잔잔한 물길과 산세가 감싸 안은 평화로운 마을입니다. 사람과 자연이 서로 기대어 살아가는 이곳은 세월이 흘러도 변치 않는 온기를 품고 있는 공동체의 터전입니다. 그리고 바로 그 삶의 결이 예술로 이어지는 순간이 오늘 펼쳐지고 있습니다. ‘2025 월간 영귀미’는 지역의 일상을 예술의 언어로 번역하는 특별한 시도입니다.

5월부터 10월까지 매달 다른 장소—문방구, 빨래터, 버스정류장 등—에서 젊은 예술가들이 영귀미의 풍경과 사람들의 기억을 각자의 시선으로 담아냅니다. 이 프로젝트는 단순한 전시를 넘어, 공간과 사람, 그리고 시간이 엮어내는 공동체의 서사(敍事)입니다. 그 속에서 예술은 화려한 무대가 아니라, 사람과 사람을 잇는 다리이자, 지역을 이해하는 또 하나의 언어로 살아납니다. 결국 ‘2025 월간 영귀미’는 예술가만의 작업이 아닙니다. 이곳 주민들의 이야기이며, 마을의 역사이며, 함께 살아가는 공동체가 써 내려가는 ‘아름다운 귀향의 서사’입니다.

삶의 결이 곧 예술의 결이 되는 이 순간, 그 자체가 바로 ‘詠歸美’, 라는 이름의 참된 의미일 것입니다.

존경하는 여러분, 이 작은 시도가 앞으로 지역 예술의 새로운 가능성을 열고, ‘지역의 이해가 곧 예술의 출발점’이라는 소중한 가치를 보여주는 빛나는 발자취로 남기를 진심으로 바랍니다.

Dear artists and beloved residents, It is my great pleasure to join you on this meaningful occasion today.

One day last May, I received a message from artist Joohee Park. She shared her wish to create an art project based on Yeonggwimi-myeon, together with young artists. But more than holding a simple exhibition, she wanted to begin by listening—to understand the lives and stories of the local people. In that moment, I was deeply moved. We all know how precious it is when art is born from the soil of a place, and breathes again within the lives of its people.

Located in the eastern part of Hongcheon County, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, Yeonggwimi-myeon (詠歸美面) is, from its very name, already a poem. “詠 (Yeong)” means to recite or sing, “歸 (Gwi)” means to return, and “美 (Mi)” means beauty. Together, they form the phrase: “To return beautifully, singing along the way.” The name carries within it a longing for harmony between people, nature, and the idea of home.

During the Joseon Dynasty, this area was known as Yeonggwimi-myeon of Hongcheon-hyeon, but during the Japanese colonial period, its name was changed to Dong-myeon (Eastern District). Yet, the residents never forgot the original name. Finally, on June 1, 2021, through the unified will of the community, Yeonggwimi-myeon was restored to its rightful name. This was not merely an administrative change—it was a symbolic act of reclaiming the region’s history, spirit, and identity. Within the name Yeonggwimi lies the pride, memory, and resilience of a community that has endured the test of time.

Today, Yeonggwimi-myeon is a peaceful village embraced by gentle rivers and mountain ridges. Here, people and nature live side by side, sharing warmth that time cannot fade. And now, the texture of that life continues into art.
The project ‘2025 Monthly Yeonggwimi’ is a unique attempt to translate the everyday lives of this region into the language of art.

From May to October, each month features a different space—a stationery shop, a wash site, a bus stop—where young artists reinterpret the landscape and memories of Yeonggwimi through their own perspectives. This project goes beyond a simple exhibition; it is a narrative woven from space, people, and time. Here, art is not a stage of spectacle but a bridge connecting lives—a new language for understanding place and community. Ultimately, ‘2025 Monthly Yeonggwimi’ is not only the work of artists. It is the story of the residents, the history of the village, and a collective narrative of return—an “aesthetic homecoming” written together.

When the patterns of life flow seamlessly into art, that very moment embodies the true meaning of Yeonggwimi—“to return beautifully, singing along the way.”
