■ 정류장에서 떠나고 — 다시 돌아오는 — 순간들

강원도 홍천군 영귀미면 속초1리. 이 마을의 중심부, 동면치안센터 앞에 자리한 농협 정류장은 수십 년 동안 마을 사람들의 삶과 함께 호흡해온 장소다. 정확한 기록은 남아 있지 않지만, 1954년 창립된 ‘대한교통’의 노선에 따라 정류장이 생겨났을 가능성이 높으며, 이는 곧 정류장이 최소 70년 가까운 시간 동안 마을의 출발과 귀환을 지켜봐 왔음을 뜻한다. 실제로 이 정류장은 시간에 따라 변화해왔다. 2017년에는 나무 벤치와 개방형 구조였던 이곳은 2019년부터 스크린 도어와 철제 벤치가 설치되며 현재의 형태로 바뀌었다. 2021년까지는 정류장 뒤편 나무 주변에 나무 벤치가 있었고, 그 자리는 이후 돌 화단으로 바뀌었다. 이 작은 변화들은 마을의 생활 방식과 이용자들의 흐름을 고스란히 반영한다.

버스정류장은 단순히 이동을 위한 장소가 아니다. 오히려 그 장소는 사람들의 감정과 일상의 리듬이 교차하는 ‘사이’에 존재하는 곳이다. 영귀미면은 초등학교와 중학교까지만 운영되는 지역으로, 많은 아이들이 고등학교 진학을 위해 읍내나 도시로 떠나야 했다. 어른들 또한 생계를 위해 읍내 시장이나 더 먼 도시로 떠났지만, 때로는 가족에게로 돌아오기도 했다. 농협 정류장은 바로 그 ‘출발점’이자 ‘귀환점’이었고, 기다림과 배웅, 귀가와 재회의 장면들이 반복되어온 마을의 일상이자 기억의 장소였다.

‘노래하며 아름다운 곳으로 돌아온다’는 뜻의 영귀미면. 이 마을의 이름은 정류장이 지닌 장소성과도 절묘하게 맞닿아 있다. 정류장은 단지 물리적인 이동의 거점이 아니라, 삶의 궤적이 잠시 멈췄다가 다시 움직이는, 감정의 경계이자 시간의 여백이다. 《멈춤과 출발 사이》는 그 여백을 주목한다.

2025년 7월, 《멈춤과 출발 사이》 전시는 이 농협 정류장이 품고 있는 시간과 감정, 그리고 마을 사람들의 이동과 정체성을 다시 바라보는 예술적 시도이다. 이용객은 줄었지만 여전히 운행을 이어가고 있는 대한교통의 버스처럼, 이 정류장이 담고 있는 기억 또한 마모되지 않고 어딘가에서 이어지고 있음을 우리는 감지한다.

이번 전시에 참여한 세 명의 작가들은 각자의 경험과 상상력을 통해 이 장소가 품고 있는 ‘사이의 시간’을 시각화한다. 어린 시절 정류장에서 친구를 배웅하던 오후의 노을빛, 버스 안에서 마주친 낯선 대화가 만들어낸 이야기의 전이, 그리고 출발과 귀환 사이를 반복하며 구축된 관계의 풍경들. 이 모든 장면들이 작가들의 시선을 통해 다시 구성되고, 관객은 그 안에서 자신만의 기억과 감정을 환기할 수 있다. 우리는 때로 떠나야만 했고, 다시 돌아올 수도 있었다. 그 사이에, 무수히 많은 시간이 흐르고 관계가 쌓이며 기억이 남는다. 이 전시는 그런 ‘멈춤과 출발’의 시간 속에서 마을과 사람들, 그리고 우리 모두의 삶이 어떻게 겹쳐지고 변화하는지를 함께 바라보는 하나의 창이 되기를 바란다.


In Sokcho 1-ri, Yeonggwimi-myeon, Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon-do, there is a small bus stop in front of the Dongmyeon Police Station and the Nonghyup building. For decades, this stop has been a quiet witness to the lives of local residents. Though the exact history is unclear, it is likely that the stop appeared around 1954, when Daehan Transportation was founded. That means this stop has seen nearly 70 years of departures and returns.

Over the years, the stop itself has changed. In 2017, it had a wooden bench and no screen doors. By 2019, new metal benches and a screen were added. In 2021, a wooden bench behind the shelter was replaced by a stone planter. These small changes reflect shifts in the way people move and live in the village.

But a bus stop is not just a place to get on and off. It is a space where people’s emotions and rhythms of daily life meet. In Yeonggwimi-myeon, there are only elementary and middle schools. Most children must leave for the town or city to attend high school. Adults often travel out for work or markets, but they also return — to their homes, families, and memories. This stop became both a point of departure and a place of return. Waiting, sending off, coming home — it has held countless scenes of everyday village life.

“Yeonggwimi” means “a place you return to, singing and beautifully.” The name fits this stop perfectly. This is not only a physical point of travel. It is a threshold — a space where life pauses before it begins again, where emotions gather before they move on.

In July 2025, the exhibition 《Between Pause and Departure》 looks closely at the stories and feelings that this small stop holds. Though fewer people use the buses today, the routes of Daehan Transportation still run — and so do the memories that once passed through here.

Three artists take part in this project, each responding to the time “in between” — the space between people, between leaving and returning, between light and stillness. Their works bring out different layers: the orange sunset as a friend leaves, an unexpected conversation on a ride home, or the quiet connection shared in the wait before a bus arrives. Through these moments, viewers are invited to recall their own memories tied to movement, distance, and return.

《Between Pause and Departure》 focuses on that in-between space. We all have had to leave at times — and we all hope to return. In that space between, time passes, relationships form, and memories remain. This exhibition offers a window into how those “in between” moments shape the lives of people, of the village, and of us all.
